HEIN MULDERS TO BECOME COLOGNE’S OPERA DIRECTOR
14 April 2021, Cologne. Hein Mulders will be the new Director of the Cologne Opera. He is currently Director in Essen, responsible for the Aalto Theater, Essen Philharmonic, and Essen Philharmonic Hall sectors. Prior to this, the 58-year-old Dutchman was the artistic director of De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam.
He will begin his directorship in Cologne on 1 September 2022, thus seamlessly continuing the Opera’s interim phase in the Staatenhaus. After conclusion of the renovation of the Cologne Opera, designed by Wilhelm Riphahn, Hein Mulders will lead the opera division of the Bühnen Köln back to Offenbachplatz for the 2024-25 season.
Cologne’s Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra François-Xavier Roth welcomes the decision: “It is with great pleasure that I learned of the appointment of Hein Mulders as Director of the Cologne Opera. I am confident that he will lead the house into the future and further develop it with great energy and his fantastic creativity. I’m looking forward to working together with him in the coming seasons, both in the Staatenhaus as well as when the Opera at Offenbachplatz reopens.”
The Managing Director of the Gürzenich Orchestra, Stefan Englert, adds, “Cologne’s Gürzenich Orchestra, the opera orchestra of the city of Cologne, is very much looking forward to the future collaboration with Hein Mulders. With his creativity, extensive leadership experience and outstanding international network, he will position the Opera as a flagship of the music metropolis Cologne. Personally, I am very much looking forward to the collegial exchange and joint work with Hein Mulders.«
Hein Mulders is looking forward to his new creative sphere of action: “I’m delighted about my new role as Director of the Cologne Opera. It is a great honour for me to be able to reopen the house at Offenbachplatz with its long-standing tradition, following renovations of more than a decade. I would like to get to know the employees of the Opera and the Bühnen Köln soon and exchange with them about the future. I anticipate collaborating with the Gürzenich Orchestra and General Music Director François-Xavier Roth with excitement. I am convinced that together we will accomplish remarkable things.”
