An evening full of stories, in which the music itself tells the tale: the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne plays works by Maurice Ravel, Hector Berlioz and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, most notably the famous symphonic suite Scheherazade, inspired by the stories from One Thousand and One Nights. Baritone Christian Gerhaher and conductor Riccardo Minasi bring characters, moods and narratives to life, transforming every sound into a story in its own right.
At the same time, the evening pays tribute to Konrad Adenauer: before the concert begins, Lord Mayor Torsten Burmester honours the cultural legacy of Cologne's first Federal Chancellor and long-standing Lord Mayor. Adenauer had a lasting impact on the city by promoting reconstruction after the First World War, developing the urban green belt, reopening the University of Cologne, expanding trade fairs and infrastructure, and promoting art, culture and education – achievements that continue to shape Cologne to this day.
Musical storytelling and historical memory merge into an evening that makes Cologne's cultural identity audible and tangible. An experience that celebrates music, history and city history at the same time.
