»Amériques« (1922)

The great Hungarian conductor and composer Peter Eötvös takes the Gürzenich Orchestra on a fascinating journey. The song of the sirens inspired his sonic imagination for a new orchestral piece, here in its German premiere. And In his violin concerto Alhambra, the famous Moorish fortress in Southern Andalusia becomes a musical monument: Spanish and Arabic elements merge in this violin concerto, for which Isabelle Faust returns to the Gürzenich Orchestra. For Edgard Varèse, America was the focal point for a new beginning. Varèse turned his back on Europe in 1915 and paid homage to his new homeland in Amériques, a unique sound poem depicting New York when it was still marked by the industrial age, with its myriad noises, incessant traffic and masses of people. A counter-accent comes from Iannis Xenakis: with Shaar, he opens a gate through which his hero, besieged by the devil, finally manages to escape to safety.
