Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor op. 40 (1837)

Gustav Mahler

Symphony No. 1 in D major Titan (1888/99)

»It’s as if you shake a tree, and the sweet, ripe fruit falls down without further ado«. These were Robert Schumann’s words after the premiere of Mendelssohn’s Second Piano Concerto. Indeed, it took Mendelssohn (who was usually scrupulous in the constant amendment of his own works) only a few days to harvest this ripe, sweet and lively fruit: on his honeymoon – newly-wed and in love. Gustav Mahler on the other hand drew his inspiration from unrequited love. Folk songs and bird sounds, a funeral march and a Ländler, blinding visions and heavenly peace all come together in his diverse cosmos of musical inspiration. Kristian Bezuidenhout is the soloist in the Mendelssohn Concerto, and the Gürzenich Orchestra welcomes back Pablo Heras-Casado as conductor.
