"The Nutcracker" (1892). A Christmas story, told after the fairy tale "Nutcracker and Mouse King" by E. T. A. Hoffmann

Christmas is the festival of miracles and inexplicable mysteries. Orchestra dog Gürzi knows that too, and he invites you to take a journey into the magical world of toys, together with Marie and the nutcracker, and to experience exciting adventures. At this staged concert, the Gürzenich Orchestra will retell one of the most beloved Christmas stories, employing E. T. A. Hoffmann’s literary fairy tale. The well-known music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky will get the whole family in the mood for the Christmas celebration.

Director Kai Anne Schuhmacher has adopted the literary source, which has lost none of its fascination since it was written in 1816, for the Family Concert. Together with stage and costume designer Mara Lena Schönborn, she has transformed it into a parable about the value of reliability and friendship. Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s immortal ballet music is among the composer’s most beautiful and popular creations. With its brio and catchy melodies, it will fascinate young and adult classical music fans equally.
