Orchestra Academy

Top orchestras thrive through top musicians!

The Orchestra Academy of the Gürzenich Orchestra supports the next generation of international orchestral talent. It serves as a training ground for gifted young instrumentalists, preparing them for their professional careers at the end of or following their studies.

The Orchestra Academy of the Gürzenich Orchestra supports the next generation of orchestral musicians and sees itself as an international talent hub for gifted instrumentalists who are preparing for their professional careers either following or toward the end of their studies.

The training includes rehearsals, concerts, performances, recordings, and tours with one of Germany’s most renowned symphony and opera orchestras (participation in up to 15 rehearsals and concerts/performances per month), as well as regular instrumental and chamber music lessons given by members of the orchestra. Additionally, the program offers workshops and coaching sessions to help with performance anxiety and to improve stage presence, along with chamber music concerts. Students are mentored by members of the orchestra throughout their time in the academy.

The training is initially limited to one year, with the option of an extension for a second year. There is a six-month probationary period. The notice period for termination is four weeks.

The conditions include a monthly gross salary of €1,300 paid by the Gürzenich Orchestra, as well as an annual flat-rate allowance for reeds, mouthpieces, and strings provided by the Orchestra Academy’s association.

Applicants must not have held prior fixed substitute contracts in other orchestras lasting longer than 12 months. Previous internships (including those at different orchestras) and training in orchestral academies with lower TVK classification must not exceed a combined duration of 24 months.

Further Information

  • Applicants must be no older than 27 at the beginning of the training.
  • A certificate of enrollment at a university is recommended.
  • German language proficiency at level B1 is desired. If this level is not yet achieved, participation in a German language course at the beginning of the training (ideally before it starts) is strongly recommended.
