Tom Owen

Oboe Principal

Tom Owen was born in Sussex, England, and studied in London and Hanover. He has been the solo oboist of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne since 2006.

Tom Owen regularly gives masterclasses and concerts at prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Central Conservatory Beijing, Shanghai Conservatory, the Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, as well as music universities in Cologne, Stuttgart, Detmold, Hanover, Ljubljana, Zagreb, and Trossingen. He also leads masterclasses as part of the "Duchi d'Aquaviva" festival in Atri, Italy.

From 2017 to 2019, he was a faculty member for wind chamber music at the Folkwang University of the Arts Essen. Since 2022, he has taught oboe at the Maastricht Conservatory. He is a jury member for the International Double Reed Society Competition 2024 and since 2024 has been supervising wind section rehearsals for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra Academy.

Tom Owen has performed with many leading European orchestras, including the NDR, WDR, SWR, both Berlin Radio Orchestras, Camerata Salzburg, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Philharmonia London, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Bamberg Symphony. He has also played at opera houses in Munich, Dresden, Frankfurt, and Hamburg.

As a soloist, he has collaborated with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, performing works by Strauss and Mozart under conductors such as François-Xavier Roth and Markus Stenz. He has performed in major venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London.

As a passionate chamber musician, Tom is co-founder and deputy chairman of the Cologne Chamber Music Association "KammerMusikKöln." He has supported two chamber music series in Cologne and Bonn, with over 50 concerts available on YouTube. He has performed with the German Linos Ensemble, the Calmus Ensemble, and released the first Gerald Finzi chamber music album with the Cologne Chamber Soloists under the "MDG" label. Tom Owen has appeared at festivals worldwide and was appointed Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015.
