Uwe Mattes
Uwe Mattes was born in 1999 in Tuttlingen. He began classical percussion lessons at the age of five. He attended masterclasses with Ney Rosauro (University of Miami) and Franz Schindlbeck (Berlin Philharmonic), as well as workshops such as the Ochsenhausen Chamber Music Course, the Autumn Chamber Music Course at the Bundesakademie Trossingen, and the Brass & Percussion Symposium at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen. In 2014, he received a scholarship for the Detmold Summer Academy.
In the “Jugend musiziert” competition, Uwe Mattes won first prizes up to the national level and also participated in the 2012 “Jugend jazzt” competition. He won the Förderpreis (Advancement Award) of the State University of Music Trossingen and is a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes).
He is a member of several music associations, including the jazz combo Sigisbert Stehle, the big band of the Musikschule Tuttlingen, and the Baden-Württemberg Symphony Youth Wind Orchestra. In 2016, he participated in the International Regions Symphony Orchestra (IRO) and was admitted to the Federal Youth Orchestra (Bundesjugendorchester), where he most recently served as the section leader of the percussion register. Since 2017, he has also been a member of the State Youth Percussion Ensemble.
Since November 2018, Uwe Mattes has been a member of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. He also performs as a soloist with the Laubenheim chamber ensemble and the Tuttlingen chamber orchestra both in Germany and abroad.
Uwe Mattes completed a young student program at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen with Franz Lang, where he has been studying for his bachelor’s degree since the winter semester 2017/18. In the 2019/2020 season, he was a percussion intern at the Darmstadt State Theatre. From November 2020, Uwe Mattes was an academy member of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, and since January 1, 2022, he has been the principal percussionist there.
