Singing is pure joy - especially when you sing together. And even more so when you can light up the Cologne Philharmonic Hall together with an orchestra. We would like to make this great experience accessible to many people and have therefore founded the Citizens’ Choir. Here, people from a wide variety of backgrounds come together to prepare for a concert with the Gürzenich Orchestra. To meet each other at eye level is very important to us: choirmaster Michael Ostrzyga and chiefconductor François-Xavier Roth rehearse with the singers with enthusiasm, respect and fun.

On the schedule for the Citizens’ is one of the greatest works of vocal symphonic music: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, with which François-Xavier Roth will open the new 2024/25 season. Rehearsals for the Citizens* Choir begin on April 10, 2024 and registration is now open. For further questions please consult our FAQ. We look forward hearing your voice!

FAQ

  • What are the requirements?

      As a singer in the citizens choir, you should be able to sing! Preferably you should already have choral experience. Regular and committed attendance at rehearsals is a prerequisite for participation in the citizens' choir. The minimum age is 16, but the most important requirement is of course to enjoy making music together.

  • Where can I register?

      Registration is possible via this link and is open until April 10, 2024.

  • After my application: How will I know if I can participate?

      Once you have registered by e-mail, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from us including an invitation to the opening rehearsal. You will find out everything else at this kick-off rehearsal on site. We want a large choir with a balanced representation of all voices. There will initially be short rehearsals in small groups in which we want to get to know your voices better and see how everything can fit together well.

  • How can I prepare for the opening rehearsal?

      You can download the rehearsal schedule here. Rehearsals take place at the University of Cologne, at the orchestra rehearsal center in Stolbergerstraße and at the Cologne Philharmonic Hall. The exact addresses can be found on the rehearsal schedule.

  • Is there a minimum age to participate in the Bürgerchor?

      Anyone who is at least 16 years old can take part in the citizens' choir.

FOLGE 1 | VORFREUDE AUF DAS FESTKONZERT In der ersten Folge begleiten wir die Sängerinnen und Sänger des Kölner Bürgerchores bei den ersten Proben für das Projekt »Feuertrunken« mit Beethovens 9. Sinfonie.

FOLGE 2 | AUF DIE GROSSE BÜHNE Die Sängerinnen und Sänger des Bürgerchors treffen zum ersten Mal auf das Gürzenich-Orchester und François-Xavier Roth. Schauplatz der Proben ist jetzt nicht mehr die Uni, sondern die Kölner Philharmonie. Die Spannung steigt und die Vorfreude auf den Auftritt auf der großen Bühne wäschst.

FOLGE 3 | EIN FEST DER FREUDE Der Tag der großen Saisoneröffnung ist gekommen. Die Sängerinnen und Sänger des Bürgerchors bereiten sich kurz vorm Auftritt auf das Festkonzert »Feuertrunken« vor. Die Freude ist spürbar und das gesamte Publikum wird mitgerissen. Was für ein Fest der Freude.

At the start of rehearsals for the wish list concert on 18.12.22, familiar faces meet again, but new singers also join in. The anticipation for the project is rising and the enthusiasm for singing together unites the multi-faceted citizens' choir.

FOLGE 5 | DIE ERSTE PROBE MIT DEM ORCHESTER Es geht weiter in Richtung große Bühne für den Bürgerchor. Die Sängerinnen und Sänger haben sich mittlerweile zu einem routinierten Chor entwickelt und treffen das erste Mal auf das Gürzenich-Orchester und François-Xavier Roth. Dem Wunschzettelkonzert am 18.12.2022 steht nun nichts mehr im Weg.

Folge 6 | Das Wunschzettelkonzert Endlich ist es soweit: Der Bürgerchor tritt mit dem Gürzenich-Orchester auf der großen Bühne der Kölner Philharmonie auf. Das Wunschzettelkonzert hat allen Sänger*innen, Musiker*innen und jedem im Publikum noch einmal gezeigt, worauf es an Weihnachten wirklich ankommt: auf Beisammensein, Freude und gemeinsames Musizieren.
