fanfares for a new beginning
After a phase of cultural standstill, forced silence and the absence of concerts, a new project by the Gürzenich Orchestra and its chief conductor François-Xavier Roth sends an audible signal of joy and hope throughout the urban space: Fanfares for a new Beginning, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, celebrates more than the return of concert life after lockdown. Rather, composers are explicitly encouraged to create new short works dealing with the changes wrought by the coronavirus crisis. Through the end of this year, every symphony concert will be preceded by a specially commissioned fanfare.
The first of these was performed during the Season Opening Gala Concert; it is Ayanna Witter-Johnson’s »Fanfare for the Brave« for brass ensemble and percussion: »I feel honoured to compose the first of these fanfares. They send a powerful message that new music remains present during times of coronavirus, and must not disappear,« says Witter-Johnson.
This season, further fanfares will follow, written by composers such as Georg Friedrich Haas, Olga Neuwirth, Enno Poppe, Martin Matalon, Philipp Maintz and Philippe Manoury. In addition, there will also be fanfares composed or arranged by members of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne. »Many works of our repertoire cannot be performed under the current circumstances. We are all the more pleased that the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is enabling us to present an audible signal of hope and new beginnings during these difficult times,« says Stefan Englert, managing director of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne.
